Why Is Malesela Teffo Arrested?
On Thursday, advocate Malesela Teffo, who is defending four of the individuals charged with the murder of Senzo Meyiwa, was detained inside the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
When an investigating officer and a group of police officers contacted Teffo, the accused murders’ trial had just been postponed.
According to News24, a warrant of arrest was issued by the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court after Teffo failed to appear in court for a separate case in which he is the defendant. Teffo, looking agitated, inquired whether his counsel had been notified and questioned why he was being detained.
He said he was detained because Police Minister Bheki Cele did not want him to represent the defendants in the Meyiwa murder trial. Teffo was finally handcuffed and transferred to the court’s holding cells, where the four defendants he represents had been taken just moments before.
On Friday, he is scheduled to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court.
