Adie Timmermans Belgium Chimpanzee Affair Explained
Adie Timmermans is not happy with the way she was banned from visiting the Antwerp zoo to see her favorite primate.
According to Yahoo! News, Timmermans said she loves the male chimpanzee and the feeling is mutual. This is precisely the reason the zoo decided to ban visits.
Antwerp Zoo spokeswoman Sarah Lafaut said they banned Timmermans due to the unhealthy relationship between her and Chita, the male chimpanzee.
Their closeness apparently impeded his ability to socialize with his own species. The spokeswoman said when an animal is too focused on humans, they are not respected by their peers.
The same happened with Chita. When the chimps are surrounded by humans, the other chimpanzees ignored him and did not consider him as part of the group. As a result, Chita spent the hours outside the zoo’s opening time alone and isolated.
The 38-year-old Chita was initially a pet but was later donated to the zoo around 30 years ago after his owner found his behavior unmanageable.
The zoo said he was already familiar with humans and is very friendly with people. During a 2008 brawl with other male chimpanzees, he was seriously injured.
