Both Allan Gore and Candy Montgomery were suspected of murdering Betty Gore shortly after her death in June 1980, and Gore was even detained. He did, however, have a solid alibi: he was abroad on business in St. Paul, Minnesota, at the time of the incident in Wylie, Texas. He had neighbors check in on his wife after he couldn’t reach her for many days, when they discovered her dead.

During questioning, Gore admitted to the police that he had been having an affair with Candy, providing the authorities with a motive and resulting in Candy’s arrest. Montgomery, however, was cleared of the murder allegation on October 30, 1980, arguing self-defense.

Candy confided to a friend that she and her husband, Pat, lived a pretty monotonous life, according to Jim Atkinson and John Bloom’s book “Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs.” Meanwhile, Allan and Betty were expecting a child, which dampened their romantic lives, especially for Allan. According to accounts, candy approached Allan sometime in late 1978 and indicated her desire to have an affair with him.

Allan hadn’t given the prospect any thought before, but he had now. Weeks of assessing the benefits and drawbacks and the risks of having an affair followed. Candy and Allan talked on the phone frequently, generally while the former was at work. Neither wanted to get emotionally engaged, ruin their marriages, or harm their husbands’ feelings. They did, however, want to go on with the affair.
