Will Zalatoris finished second in his Master’s debut, and Ryan Goble, a 24-year-old Visalia native, was on the bag.
Since the 4th of July weekend in 2019, Goble has been caddying for Zalatoris.
It wasn’t on the PGA Tour back then but on the Korn Ferry Tour, golf’s minor league equivalent.
Who Caddies For Will Zalatoris? Meet Ryan Goble
Will Zalatoris is currently carrying a man named Ryan Goble. We’re not sure when they started working together, but Goble is no stranger to the professional golf world, having previously caddied for John Merrick.
Goble was on Merrick’s bag for his only PGA Tour victory, which came in a playoff over Charlie Beljan at the 2013 Northern Trust Open.
And that would maintain alive a bizarre statistic: of the seven major championships held at Southern Hills, each was won by a player who led or co-led the tournament for the full 36 holes.
With a second-round 65 on Friday, Zalatoris climbed the leaderboard to 9 under par. He tees off in the final group with Mito Pereira at 2:50 p.m. CT.
Ryan Goble, the caddy for Zalatoris, was having some “veg time” after a Mexican food dinner in Tulsa on Friday night when The Caddie Network’s John Rathouz met up with him.
“So Close” Will Zalatoris and Happy Gilmore Caddy Comparison
Will Zalatoris, who placed second in the US Masters on Monday, has been compared to a character in the golf cult film “Happy Gilmore,” which he resembles.
He doesn’t seem to mind. Zalatoris has embraced it. So much so that he has a quotation from the movie scene written on the lob wedge with his likeness.
It was a stunning way for Zalatoris to announce his entrance on one of the sport’s greatest stages. And if he maintains his current form, he can gain fans outside of the sporting world.
