The Mirabal sisters were three sisters known as Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa, who opposed Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorship.
The Mirabal sisters were involved in clandestine activities against his regime.
On November 25, 1960, the three sisters were assassinated. Adela “Dedé,” the last sister who was not involved in political activities at the time, died of natural causes on February 1, 2014.
Following their assassination, the Mirabal sisters became “symbols of both popular and feminist resistance.”
In their honor, the United Nations General Assembly declared November 25 the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in 1999.
Who Are The Mirabal Sisters And What Happened To Them?
The Mirabal family were farmers from the Dominican Republic’s central Cibao region, with a farm in the village of Ojo de Agua, near the town of Salcedo.
On November 25, 1960, Patria, Minerva, Mara Teresa, and their driver, Rufino de la Cruz, were visiting the incarcerated husbands of Mara Teresa and Minerva.
Patria’s husband was not imprisoned, but she accompanied him for moral support.

They were stopped on their way home by Trujillo’s henchmen. De la Cruz and the sisters were separated, strangled, and clubbed to death.
The bodies were then gathered and placed in their Jeep, driven off the mountain road to make their deaths appear to be an accident.
The Mirabal Sisters Biography
The sisters were raised by their parents, Enrique Mirabal Fernández and Mercedes Reyes Camilo, who were members of the social elite.
All four sisters went to primary school in their village of Oja de Agua and then to a Catholic boarding school, El Colegio de la Inmaculada, in the city of La Vega for secondary education.

It was customary to have a picture of Rafael Trujillo in the household once he took power; however, the Mirabal house never had a vision of Trujillo and was thus considered people in disagreement with the Trujillo regime.
Are Mirabal Sisters Real?
Mirabal Sisters are real, and so is their horrible death experience, as it is already included in Wikipedia.
In honor of the sisters, the United Nations General Assembly declared November 25 as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on December 17, 1999.
It kicks off a 16-day period of activism against gender violence. December 10 is International Human Rights Day, marking the end of that period.
