Joel was the second chairmperson of the SFCSJ and was head of the tourist briefing program, managing tourists from South Florida, politicians and community leaders.

For 3 decades, he served as a member of the board of the Union of Councils for Soviet Jews.

Joel was also an ophthalmologist and a Voluntary Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

Adele and Joel travelled round the world together, and even paid visits to Soviet Jews.

At some point, they were barred entry into Russia.

They were both known as frontline activists, who led protests and rallies, community education and community speaking, for individual refusenik families.
