In October 2019, Kyrell Matthews, a two-year-old child, was discovered in cardiac arrest at his house in Thornton Heath, south London.
When he died, he suffered 41 rib fractures, which his mother, Phylesia Shirley, 24, claimed were caused by CPR.
Shirley was found guilty of manslaughter and Kemar Brown was found guilty of murder after a trial at the Old Bailey.
Mr. Justice Lucraft QC addressed Shirley, saying that the court had to listen to recordings she recorded of the abuse meted out to a “defenseless” young boy.

The prosecution told jurors that Kyrell was injured in at least five episodes in the four weeks leading up to his death.
Shirley called NHS 111 when Kyrell became “floppy” at her flat on October 20, according to the court. After calling the non-emergency helpline, she conducted two-handed CPR for several minutes.
The injuries, according to Mr. Brown’s defense, were caused by Shirley receiving wrong information on how to resuscitate the child.

Multiple reports suggest that Kyrell Matthews’s mother is Phylesia Shirley and had a stepfather named Kemar Brown.
Shirley had prioritized her relationship with Brown over the interests of her own kid, according to prosecutor Edward Brown QC.
Brown has robbery, battery, having a knife, narcotics, and resisting a police officer convictions, as well as a non-molestation order connected to a prior girlfriend, according to reports.
Kyrell, who was non-verbal at the time of his death, was also suffering from internal hemorrhage and a 1.6in (4cm) incision to his liver.

Kyrell was repeatedly slapped on the audio files captured by his mother, with Brown demanding “shut up,” leading the youngster to weep and scream.
It came after Kyrell received a serious injury to the side of his face in May 2019 and spent five days in Croydon University Hospital.
Shirley’s statement that the little boy had fallen off a sofa and banged his head on a highchair was determined to be “plausible” by the hospital after an inquiry.
