She met Andrew Chatto, the producer of fruit and grandchild of Chatto & Windus, the founder of the company, in the early 1940s.
In 1943 they were brought together by their shared love of plants. In 1946 and 1948, their two daughters, Diana and Mary, came to life in Braiswick, Colchester.
In 1960, they entered the new White Barn House, constructed on Elmstead’s farm. Sadly, in 1999 Andrew passed away.
At the age of 94, on 13 May 2018, Bath Chatto died.
Chatto commissioned writer Catherine Horwood in her later years to write about her life and her work. In 2019 Pimpernel Press released Beth Chatto: A Life with Plants.
