With the support of friends Patrick “Pete” Randall, Vance “J.R.” Lattime, Jr., and Raymond Fowler, Flynn was able to pull it off.

During the investigation, Lattime’s father presented police with a.38 caliber revolver he had discovered in his home, assuming it to be the murder weapon. Pierce was also aware of the scheme, according to an anonymous report received on May 14.

Detective Daniel Pelletier contacted Smart in the parking lot of her school on August 1, 1990. Smart had spoken to him at least six times before and recognized him.

Smart was then handcuffed and arraigned in Derry District Court before being sent to the New Hampshire State Prison for Women in Goffstown.
