Michael Skakel Verdict Overturn On Martha Moxley Murder Explained
Michael Skakel and Martha Moxley were neighbors in the affluent neighborhood of Belle Haven, Greenwich.
Fifteen-year-old while Martha and Michael’s elder brother, Thomas who was 17 at the time, were a ‘thing.’
Martha’s mother, Dorthy Moxley, spoke to CBS, where she stated that Martha’s flirting with Thomas could have been the reason behind the murder intent.
Since Martha was last seen with Thomas and was found dead the next morning, Thomas was the initial suspect.
Many prime suspects were in the murder, but the Skakel family’s influence made it hard to bring the case to court.
However, the 1975 case reopened in 1998, and Michael surrendered on January 9, 2000. The court ruled out that Skakel would be tried as an adult in the case though he was a juvenile at the time of the murder.
Skakel was found guilty of murdering Moxley, sentenced to 20 years to life in prison on June 7, 2002, and spent his upcoming days at the Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown, Connecticut.
Nevertheless, he was released on November 21, 2013, on a $1.2 million bond with conditions. The first condition was that he be monitored with a GPS device and would not be allowed to leave the state of Connecticut unless granted permission.
Ultimately, the state of Connecticut has decided not to retry Skakel for the murder case again as of 2020.
