Seven years after their first child, Christopher, Susan, and John adopted their second child, Melissa Sutton. By the time of the attack, she was 18 and a freshman in college.

Later, Garrett informed police that Christopher had hired him to murder his parent. Christopher had frequently discussed killing his parents with his girlfriend, Juliette. He informed her that he would employ a hitman to do the task. Juliette thus gave evidence against him as well.
