Where is Joyce DeWitt today? Did she die? Wiki Bio

Joyce Anne DeWitt was born in Wheeling, West Virginia USA, on 23 April 1949, so her zodiac sign is Taurus and she holds American nationality. Joyce is best known for portraying Janet Wood in the sitcom “Three’s Company” – she is alive and well and living in Los Angeles and New Mexico, and still working as an actress.

Early life and education

Joyce was raised in Speedway, Indiana, alongside her three siblings by their father Paul DeWitt who is originally from Denmark, and their mother Norma who is from Italy.

She grew up being interested in acting and debating, and after finishing elementary school attended Speedway Senior High School where she was a cheerleader, and for a short period of time she worked at the ticket office of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Joyce was a member of the Indiana High School Forensic Association, and through them entered competitions in debate and speech. Upon matriculation, she enrolled at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where she was a member of the Chi Omega women’s fraternity, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in theatre in 1971. She continued her education at the University of California, obtaining her Master’s degree in theatre in 1974.

Movie roles

Joyce made her debut film appearance in 1978 in the drama “With This Ring”, in which she portrayed Jilly Weston, and then appeared in the parody movie “Airplane: The Sequel” in 1982 starring Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty and Lloyd Bridges, which follows the story of people who are inside a space shuttle which is heading straight to the Sun.

In 1989 she portrayed Cousin Jeri in the comedy movie “Not Without My Cousin”, and was then invited to star as Linda Hayden in the comedy movie “Spring Fling!” in 1995, which also starred James Echouse and Justin Burnette, and which is about a teacher Linda who is taking her male students on a trip to Los Angeles, California.

In 2009 she portrayed Jolene in the family movie “Call of the Wild” which starred Cristopher Lloyd, Veronica Cartwright and Christopher Dempsey, about a young girl who, after saving an injured wolf, is noticed by an evil man who wants to kill the wolf. Joyce was praised for her performance of Irene in the offbeat comedy movie “Failing Better Now” in 2010, and was then invited to portray supporting character Randi Toney in the film “The Great Fight” in 2011.

Some of her latest appearance in movies have been in “Snapshot” in which she portrayed the First Lady in 2014, “Rock Story” as Judge Carol Anne Connelly in 2015, and “The Savant”, cast as Detective Randi Toney in 2018.

Appearances in TV series

Joyce was working as a secretary before she made her debut TV series appearance in 1975 in a single episode of the detective series “Baretta”, followed by her role of Cindy in the crime drama series “Most Wanted” in 1976.

She became famous worldwide after she was invited to portray the lead character Janet Wood in the sitcom “Three’s Company” from 1977 to 1984, which also starred John Ritter and Suzanne Somers and was about two girls and a man who are living in the same apartment, and their adventures and misadventures with their neighbors.

She went on to appear in a single episode of three TV series – “Supertrain”, “The Ropers”, and “The Love Boat” all in 1979, and was then invited to portray the guest star character Lynn Powell in the episode “Portraits” of the drama series “Finder of Lost Loves” in 1984. Some of Joyce’s latest appearances in TV series have been in the episode “The Odd Couples” of “Cybill” in 1995, the episode “To Catch A Thief” of “Living Single” in 1998, and the episode “A Rising Tide Take All Boats” in “Hope Island” in 2000.

Love life and boyfriend

Several sources say that in the ‘70s the popular actress was married to Ray Buktenica, an American actor best known for starring as Benny Goodwin in the sitcom “Rhoda”.

The two allegedly met while attending college and married in 1979, however, after seven years of being together, they ‘divorced’ in 1986. However, both have said that they were living together during those years but weren’t married. Joyce explained how the relationship was very hard and how she would never do anything similar to what she did for Ray for any other man.

Joyce then began dating Henry Bushkin, who was the lawyer of Johnny Carson, an American TV host, comedian, and a writer. They were living together without having any children, but it’s unclear of their current status. Joyce appears to be officially single; she doesn’t have children.

Hobbies and other interests

Joyce is a philanthropist and has donated money to the organization Hunger and Homelessness together with several members of the House and Senate while she has also worked with the foundation Family Assistance Program of Hollywood. She has helped create many other events such as the World Food Gala held at the Kennedy Center, and the Presidential End Hunger Awards held at the White House. She is also a member of the Love is Feeding Everyone (LIFE) organization.

Joyce’s main hobby is travelling, and after the show “Three’s Company” ended, she traveled around the world before finally settling in New Mexico. She has been to nearly all the states in the US, while some of her favorite European countries which she has visited are England, France and Austria.

She has her own favorites when it comes to famous actors and actresses some of whom are Jim Carrey, Elvis Presley and Susan Sarandon, while some of her favorite movies are “Liar, Liar”, “Viva Las Vegas”, and “Bruce Almighty”.

Problems with the authorities

Joyce was arrested in El Segundo in California on 4 July 2009, after she was caught driving under the influence. She was ultimately sentenced to pay $510 and attend an alcohol program for nine months, while she was also put on a three-year probation.

Appearance and net worth

Joyce is 70 years old. She has short black hair and brown eyes, is 5ft 3ins (1.61m) tall, and weighs around 123lbs (56kgs). As of April 2020, her net worth is estimated at over $4 million.

Quotes

# Quote
1 [Denying Three’s Company (1976) producers’ assertion that she wanted her character Janet to be Jack(John Ritter)’s love interest in the spin-off Three’s a Crowd (1984), which was canceled after one season] Well, then they should have asked me if I wanted to be one. Perhaps my diplomatic side would have dropped for once, and I would have been frank about what a nightmare the idea of doing another project with them would be. I think they made two big mistakes when they did the spin-off. First and foremost, they utterly underestimated the importance of the affection and intimacy of the relationship of the audience with the other characters. Secondly, they grossly underestimated the relationship between Jack and Janet. She was the burr under his saddle-the voice of his conscience, if you will. Without that element of consistent friction, a lot of comedy is lost. It didn’t have to be Janet, and the role didn’t have to played by me. Nor can I imagine I would have agreed to work with these producers again. But some version of that relationship needed to be in the new show.
2 [2009: on Three’s Company (1976) and Hollywood] I really felt that Three’s Company was a gift. When it ended, I had money in the bank and had the luxury to pursue a life that meant something, to learn and discover. Hollywood can be brutal, inhuman, the opposite of what the theater is and I had little desire to be part of it. But now, I’m excited to work again and to, at my age, be able to keep working.
3 [on Farrah Fawcett] She had a beautiful heart. She was a lovely human being and such a brave woman, right up to her final moments. She chose to share her circumstances, her illness, with the world in order that those who had similar circumstances would be enlightened and inspired, and I have a great deal of respect for the way she left this life.
4 [2009: on rumors that she spent her pre-Hollywood years as a contractor who, after painting the garage of Barney Miller (1974) co-star Abe Vigoda, became a sort of surrogate daughter to the actor] It’s totally untrue. I’ve never even met Abe Vigoda. I never painted his house, his garage or any other thing he has. I often wonder if he thinks I’m this crazy person who made all of this up.
5 [on Suzanne Somers (2009)] I rarely talk about this, but we never actually had an argument. After her fight with the producers, as part of her publicity tour to make herself seem innocent, she made John [Ritter] and I the enemy. Several times over the past 20 years I’ve left messages, notes, letters, and have given her the phone number for the phone that rings right beside my bed, but she has never chosen to reach me, and, yet, publicly and in the press, she still tells people that I don’t speak to her.
6 [on her stardom] Shirley MacLaine once said that she didn’t want to be a big star, just a long star. That’s what I want too.
7 [on the politics of Hollywood] If that’s the way the game is played, I don’t want to play anymore.
