The defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard continues, and the actor’s expansive Sweetzer Avenue castle estate has come again into the limelight. Here’s what we know.
Johnny Depp’s defamation trial against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard is currently being heard, and there is various news circulated on the internet regarding their property. During testimony on day two of evidence in the defamation case against Ms. Heard brought by her ex-husband Depp, much was made of the art deco building in which the pair lived.
Between 2013 and 2016, Depp possessed five penthouses on the top floor of the historic Eastern Columbia Building on Broadway in the theatre district of Downtown Los Angeles. And now, his gothic Sweetzer Avenue castle has grabbed people’s eyes which he purchased in 1995 for $2.3 million.
Johnny Depp’s Sweetzer Avenue Is At Sunset Boulevard
As per a report, Johnny Depp’s Sweetzer Avenue castle was a four-acre eucalyptus grove, 90ft above 8311 Sunset Boulevard which started life nearly 100 years ago. Hersee Moody Moore, an eccentric philanthropist, moved to California in 1915. Not to mention, she was 37 at the time.
According to Los Angeles Times, in 1924, she married a Beverly Hills businessman by the name of Peter Gross. Soon after their honeymoon, Gross’ ex-housekeeper and lover sued him for violating his promise and solicited $150,000.
The same report showed that Gross shot himself in the head, leaving a death note saying death is a treat. His demise left Hersee a very rich woman. And during the same time, prospector-inventor George Campbell Carson was coming to the end of a mammoth 19-year court battle against mining corporations over a patent infringement. He reportedly won $20 million.
They met, married and began collecting antiques. In 1932, Hersee Moody Carson employed 100 workers to build her castle. It cost $500,000 to build, or approximately $10.5 million in today’s money.
Gothic Penthouse Brought Into Amber Heard Trial
As mentioned earlier, the gothic penthouse has come up again in the ongoing Heard-Depp defamation case. Its remarkable residence is almost a century old and soaked in Hollywood history.
The famous actor owned five penthouses on the top floor of the historic Eastern Columbia Building on Broadway in the theatre district of Downtown Los Angeles. It was between 2013 and 2016. Isaac Baruch, Depp’s longtime friend and neighbor, explained that he had known Depp since they were teenagers, had been in bands together, and he had served for him at The Viper Room nightclub.
He ultimately became an artist, and Depp, his patron, let him live in one of the penthouses as part of that agreement. As per a close source, Depp and Heard lived next door with an adjoining balcony to Brauch. On the other hand, Heard’s sister Whitney lived in another, and friends inhabited the others.
So, they were also contiguous to the building’s rooftop pool, with views over the city. Three units were connected via doorways, with another used by Brauch as his home and art studio and the fifth as a guest suite.
Moreover, the penthouse came to the attention following the following testimony focused on the night of May 21, 2016, and the following days, about a year after the pair had married. Heard alleges Depp to have become violent during an argument and thrown a phone at her. Baruch arrived on the penthouse floor to see shards of broken glass in the hallway and spilled wine.
The next day he said he found Heard with a security guard having the locks changed on penthouses one, three, and five, he lived in penthouse two, and it was claimed that Depp had hit her.
