Elian Gonzalez was five years old when he was discovered tucked in an inner tube floating at sea three miles from the coast of Florida’s Fort Lauderdale.

Elian Gonzalez was born to his parents in Cárdenas, Cuba. Elian, a 5-year-old boy, was discovered clinging to an inner tube off the coast of Florida on Thanksgiving Day, 1999.
Gonzalez’s mother and nine other people were killed when the ramshackle boat they were sailing in collapsed while attempting to cross the Atlantic from Cuba to the United States.
He moved to Miami to live with relatives who refused to return him to his father in Cuba. Juan Miguel Gonzalez said he was uninformed of his ex-plot wife’s to transport the kid to the United States.
The case rekindled Cold War-era tensions between the United States and Cuba, as Elian’s father and Miami relatives fought for custody of the little boy in a US court.
Elian was subsequently released to his father’s custody by US immigration officials, who traveled to the US to advocate for his son’s return. Armed US federal authorities eventually raided the Miami home where Elian resided with his uncle to reunite him with his father.
