Anthony Broadwater is a former American prisoner who was wrongfully convicted of rape.
After Broadwater was exonerated of the 1981 rape of Alice Sebold eight days later, the best-selling novelist apologized on Tuesday and labeled the Syracuse resident an “innocent man.”Broadwater’s legal team, a state court, and the Onondaga County district attorney all agreed that the case against him was deeply defective.
However, in the book ‘Lucky,’ published in 1999, Sebold extensively documented a rape she accused Broadwater of perpetrating, earning her international notoriety.
Furthermore, Broadwater, who has always maintained his innocence, said he had to rebuild his life after being freed from jail in 1998 because of the stigma of being a sex offender. Broadwater was visiting his family while on leave from the Marine Corps at the time of his arrest. He was only 20 years old at the time.

Anthony Broadwater False Conviction and Case
As a frightened 18-year-old rape victim, rape victim Alice Sebold opted to trust the American justice system. As per her, in 1982, her purpose was to bring justice to the world, not to prolong injustice. And especially not to change a young man’s life for the rest of his life by committing the same crime that had changed hers.
Further, Alice claims, she is still in pain since she was unfairly convicted, but this will aid her in coming to terms with what occurred.
Sebold wrote of being raped in 1999’s ‘Lucky,’ and then saw a Black guy on the street some months later who she thought was her assailant.
Later, Sebold headed to the police station. According to an officer, the man on the street was most likely Broadwater, who had been rumored to be in the area.
However, she failed to recognize Broadwater in a police lineup after he was caught, choosing a different guy as her assailant because she was afraid of ‘the emotion in his eyes.’
Despite this, prosecutors placed Broadwater on trial and he was convicted partly due to Sebold’s evidence on the witness stand identifying him as Alice’s rapist and testimony that microscopic hair analysis had linked him to the crime.
