New England during and after the American Civil War

The town where the March and Laurence families live is never given a name in the novel, but it’s clearly somewhere in New England and loosely based on Concord, Massachusetts, where Louisa May Alcott’s family lived all her life.

Little Women is set in the 1860s in a New England town modeled on Concord, Massachusetts. Most of the action in Part I revolves around the March’s family’s home.

The real Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House, where the writer spent part of her childhood, is located at 399 Lexington Road, in the city of Concord. Here is where she wrote Little Women back in 1868. As local media WBUR reports, today the house still survives as a museum.

She is the third daughter of Margaret and Robert March and the second youngest March sister. During her first years the March family was pretty wealthy but when Beth was three their father had lost his money. The vast majority of her life, Beth has lived in genteel poverty.

Alcott herself never married. One of the lines that Gerwig gives to Jo in the movie — “I’d rather be a free spinster and paddle my own canoe” — is actually the author’s own.

Beth says that she does not want to go so far and asks to go to the seashore again instead. When they are on holiday, Beth confesses that she knows that she will die soon. Jo tells her that she will not, but Beth is certain that she will.

In the books, Jo never likes Laurie romantically and his romantic interest only makes Jo feel uncomfortable. Not only does their dynamics change because Jo doesn´t want to fit into the traditional female role of the time but because Laurie fits into the traditional 19th-century male role almost too well.

It turns out that they had scarlet fever, and Beth—then 13 years old in the book—gets it herself after being in contact with them. According to the Mayo Clinic, “scarlet fever is a bacterial illness that develops in some people who have strep throat.” Symptoms include a fever, bright-red body rash, and a sore throat.

The 21 year age gap between Ryder and Byrne made their character’s coupling difficult to swallow for many Little Women fans. Even I, a diehard romantic who swoons at the mere suggestion of an emotional bit of a dialogue, struggled to accept their Jo and Bhaer as lovers by the end of the film.

After Beth dies, Professor Bhaer woos Jo at her home, when “They decide to share life’s burdens just as they shared the load of bundles on their shopping expedition.” She is 25 years old when she accepts his proposal.

I know the age difference between Amy and Laurie is only three or four years, but their love and marriage would seem more normal to me if Laurie was ten years older yet they simply hadn’t had much interaction when Amy was a kid.

But originally, Jo wasn’t supposed to get married.

“She did it because she thought that was the thing she had to do to please her readership and her publisher and to make it financially successful,” Gerwig explains to OprahMag.com.

As she matured, she blossomed into a beautiful woman and married John Brooke, the tutor of her neighbour, Laurie. Together, they had three children: Daisy and Demi (twins), and Josie.

The four March sisters are enduring characters in children’s literature. Meg, the oldest, beautiful and rather vain but sweet; Jo, the main focus of the books, a spirited tomboy; Beth, a sickly, gentle musician who dies in the first novel; and Amy, pampered and artistic.

They are aged 16, 15, 13 and 12. The story is set during the American Civil War, and tells the story of the sisters’ adventures and life as they grow up.
