Julie Walters, sometimes known as Dame Julia Mary Walters, is an English actress. Throughout her career, she has won various honors, including a Laurence Olivier Award, a Golden Globe Award, two International Emmy Awards, four British Academy Television Awards, and two British Academy Film Awards.
She has been nominated for two Academy Awards—one for Best Actress and the other for Best Supporting Actress—for her exceptional performances. She received the BAFTA Fellowship for lifetime achievement in 2014 in celebration of her outstanding contributions to the dramatic arts.
She was also given the honorary title of Dame (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2017 for her contributions to drama.
When Victoria Wood was applying to the School of Theatre in Manchester in 1971, Walters met Wood at an audition and soon after began working with her frequently. Their creative collaboration began with the theatrical revue “In at the Death” in 1978 and continued with the television version of Wood’s play “Talent.”
They continued to act together throughout the years, eventually starring in their own Granada Television series named “Wood and Walters” in 1982.
One of Walters’ most well-known performances was in the BAFTA-winning BBC sequel “Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV,” in which she played Mrs. Overall in Wood’s parody soap opera “Acorn Antiques.”
Where did Victoria Wood meet Julie Walters?
At Manchester Polytechnic in 1970, where Walters was nearing the end of her term and Wood was hoping to enter, the two women had first crossed paths. When both of them performed in the same revue, In At the Death, at London’s Bush Theatre in 1978, they once more ran into each other.
