Twin brothers Chuck (bassist) and John Panozzo (drummer) performed together at age 12 alongside Dennis DeYoung (former keyboardist and a founding member) in the Chicago area by using a band name The Tradewinds.
They changed the band name TW4 (There Were Four) in 1965 since new member Tom Nardini was added in replacement of Chuck as he played bass and Tom on guitar. Panozzo was the drummer, and DeYoung later switched from accordion to keyboard.
The group then joined Chicago State College and performed together at high schools and parties. Nardini left the group, and another folk guitarist, John Curulewski and JY, had been added, making the group quintet.
