‘Criminal Minds’ Profile: Jason Gideon

At the beginning of Season Three, Gideon abruptly retired from the BAU due to emotional issues brought on by the murder of his girlfriend. His position is now held by his former partner and best friend David Rossi, who has held it to this day.

In the Season 10 episode “Nelson’s Sparrow,” Gideon is murdered off-screen, having been shot deceased at a close range by a serial killer named Donnie Mallick. During the flashbacks focusing on a young version of him for the episode, which show him working at the BAU in 1978, he is played by Ben Savage.

After all he had been through, SSA Derek Morgan decided that it was time to leave the BAU and focus on his growing family. Before leaving, he presented Dr. Reid with his son’s birth announcement. His baby boy’s name, Hank Spencer Morgan, was named in honor of his late father and his best friend.

Reid is so traumatized that he develops an addiction to the narcotic painkiller Dilaudid. While the BAU team members have their suspicions about his addiction, none of them confront him about it. An old friend of Reid’s in New Orleans is also aware that Reid suffers from “problems” in (Season 2, Episode 18) “Jones”.

Another major departure came during Criminal Minds season 11 when Shemar Moore’s Derek Morgan left the team. … After helping capture the culprit and Savannah gave birth to their son Hank – named after his late father – Morgan says goodbye to the team and quits the BAU.
