When Did Nicky Campbell Find Out He Was Adopted?
Nicky Campbell, the renowned presenter and host of Long Lost Family, has a deeply personal connection to the show’s theme of reuniting families. This is because Nicky himself was adopted at a very young age.
Born in April 1961, Nicky was given up for adoption just four days after his birth. He was subsequently adopted by a loving Scottish couple, Frank and Sheila Campbell, who raised him as their own.
Although Nicky had a happy childhood with his adoptive parents, he felt a strong curiosity about his birth parents as he entered his twenties. In 1989, at the age of 28, he made the decision to search for his birth mother.
After a year of searching, Nicky finally found his birth mother, Stella Lackey, when he was 29 years old in 1990. However, he admitted in his book, “One Of The Family,” that he didn’t feel an emotional connection to her. He did, however, express sympathy for her complicated and tragic life.
Sadly, in 2008, Stella passed away. Nicky traveled to Dublin to attend her funeral, where he was joined by his half-sister Esther, who was born to Stella and another man.
In 2002, Nicky embarked on another search, this time for his birth father. He discovered that his biological father was a Belfast-born Irish Republican.
While Nicky’s journey to reconnect with his birth parents has been bittersweet, he also experienced loss within his adoptive family. His adoptive father, Frank, passed away in 1996 from pancreatic cancer. Then, in 2019, his mother Sheila, who had provided him with a loving and stable home, also passed away.
Nicky has expressed deep gratitude for the life his adoptive parents gave him. He often speaks fondly of their love and support, acknowledging that the day they adopted him was like winning the lottery.
Today, Nicky Campbell serves as an ambassador for Adoption UK, an organization that provides support to individuals and families touched by adoption. He continues to share his own experiences and advocate for the well-being of adoptive families.
In addition to his work in the television industry, Nicky has also opened up about his personal struggles, including the abuse he and his friends endured during their school years. He has been vocal about seeking justice for the abuse and fighting against the teacher responsible.
Nicky Campbell’s journey of discovery and resilience serves as an inspiration to many, and his commitment to helping others through Long Lost Family and his advocacy work demonstrates his enduring compassion and empathy.
