Charles Newby, also known as Chas Newby, is a British musician who was born on June 18, 1941. He briefly replaced Stuart Sutcliffe as the Beatles’ bassist, who was currently focusing on his art career in Hamburg, Germany.
When the Beatles returned from their first tour to West Germany, they were without a bass guitarist. Pete Best, a former member of The Black Jacks and a current member of the Beatles, advocated bringing in Chas Newby. Newby, a college student on leave, agreed to join the Beatles and play bass for them.
Chas Newby later taught math at Droitwich Spa High School in Droitwich Spa. He lived in Alcester and was a member of the charity band the Racketts. Newby had been performing live with the Quarrymen, a pre-Beatles band that includes John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, since 2016.
The death of Chas Newby was announced on May 23, 2023.
When did Chas Newby join the Beatles?
A delightful individual who is always a pleasure to meet. Newby, who was born in Liverpool in 1941, gained notoriety for his brief association with the Beatles in 1960, performing on stage alongside John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and Paul McCartney.
Why did Chas Newby leave the Beatles?
Lennon apparently wanted Newby to continue the band’s tour in West Germany, but the bassist preferred to go back to school. During an interview with the Sunday Mercury in 2012, Newby said, “Music was never going to be my living.” I desired to major in chemistry. All that John, Paul, and George wanted to do was play music.
