After being let off from his position at Sunbeam, Neil Diamond began his career by writing and singing his own songs for demos. He didn’t set out to be a songwriter; it just became increasingly essential to him.
His first recording contract was with a high school friend called Jack Packer, and they performed as “Neil and Jack,” a duet similar to the Everly Brothers.
Their singles “You Are My Love at Last” with “What Will I Do” and “I’m Scared” with “Until You’ve Tried Love” were both unsuccessful, although they received excellent reviews from Cashbox and Billboard magazines.
He signed with Columbia Records as a solo musician in 1962. Despite receiving positive reviews for the single “At Night” with “Clown Town” in 1963, Diamond was fired from the label and spent the next seven years penning songs in and out of publishing firms.
What’s Neil Diamond doing now?
Why did Neil Diamond retire? After receiving a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 2018, Neil Diamond announced his retirement from touring. He hasn’t started traveling again as of April 2023, and he seems to be content with his retirement. However, it is unclear what he is doing right now or whether he is still actively involved in music in any capacity.
