Turquoise in the United States

Most of the turquoise production in the United States has been located in the arid southwest, and most of that production has been in or around deposits of copper. Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada have all held the position of the leading turquoise-producing state.

What rocks are turquoise?

Most turquoise has been found in deeply weathered and altered rhyolitic volcanic rocks. Turquois may be a weathering product of the mineral apatite, or it may even include some organic phosphate. Turquois forms triclinic crystals—three unequal axes, none of which intersect at right angles.

Where is turquoise most commonly found?

Turquoise has been mined all over North America for hundreds of years, but its richest deposits have always been found primarily in the southwestern states of Arizona and Nevada. California has also been a popular source of the opaque blue gemstone over the years, with mines found in San Bernardino and Inyo Counties.

Is turquoise a metamorphic rock?

Gemstones associated with metamorphic rock include beryl, jade, lapis lazuli, turquoise, spinel, ruby, sapphire and zircon.

Is turquoise a rock or a mineral?

Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral that is a hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminium, with the chemical formula CuAl6(PO4)4(OH)8·4H2O. It is rare and valuable in finer grades and has been prized as a gemstone and ornamental stone for thousands of years owing to its unique hue.

How is turquoise found?

“Turquoise is formed by a complex combination of aluminum, copper, phosphorus, water, and other local ingredients that may change the color or add matrix (host rock),” Garland says. “Turquoise is found at elevations between 3,000 and 8,500 feet (914 and 2,590 meters) and typically in dry, arid climates.

Is turquoise an igneous rock?

It is a secondary mineral deposited from circulating waters, and it occurs chiefly in arid environments as blue to greenish, waxy veinlets in alumina-rich, weathered, volcanic, or sedimentary rocks.

What stones are similar to turquoise?

Magnesite is a beautiful gemstone that looks similar to Turquoise or Howlite. When cut and polished into beads, it features a dark thread of veins or a web-like matrix across its surface, making it an attractive gem to use for jewelry-making projects.

Why are some rocks turquoise?

If the mineral contains zinc, the turquoise mineral will be a yellowish color. The mineral turquoise is formed by a chemical reaction which occurs when water containing specific minerals such as copper and aluminum leak through a rock. It forms in veins, which later then turn into a clump of turquoise.

What type of rock is Amethyst?

Although most amethyst deposits are found in igneous rocks, The Quartz Page says amethysts are also found in metamorphic rocks. They are rarely found in sedimentary rocks, because the chemical conditions necessary for amethyst formation aren’t generally found as sedimentary rocks form.

How many turquoise mines are there?

There are literally hundreds of turquoise mines located across the Southwestern United States as well as in Mexico, China, Persia, and Australia.

Are turquoise stones valuable?

How much a turquoise stone is worth is a common question among turquoise collectors. The price of turquoise stones normally range from $1 to $10 per carat but can range from $0.05 to $1000 per carat depending on the quality.
