Newark, New Jersey, pays tribute to its native son and music legend, Frankie Valli, with a street named in his honor. Today, Primary Wave, in collaboration with the city of Newark and the New Jersey Hall of Fame, unveiled “Frankie Valli Way,” a new street dedicated to celebrating the enduring legacy and musical contributions of the iconic singer.
Born Francis Castelluccio on May 3, 1937, in Newark, Valli’s journey from humble beginnings to international fame has been a source of inspiration for many. As the son of a barber, who later worked for the Lionel train company, Valli’s passion for music developed at a young age. He rose to prominence as the lead singer and drummer of the quartet known as the Variatones in the 1950s.
The Variatones, comprising bassist Hank Majewski and vocalist-guitarists Tommy and Nick DeVito, underwent a series of lineup changes, with Majewski being replaced by vocalist-arranger Nick Massi in 1960, and Nick DeVito being replaced by vocalist-keyboardist-songwriter Bob Gaudio. Their musical journey led them to record Valli’s solo single “My Mother’s Eyes” in 1953.
However, it was at the Four Seasons that Valli and his bandmates achieved tremendous success. Hits like “Sherry,” released in 1962 under Vee Jay Records, catapulted them to the top of the charts and firmly established their place in music history. The Four Seasons continued to captivate audiences with their unique sound and Valli’s distinct falsetto, producing memorable songs like “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like a Man.”
Now, Newark, the city that shaped Valli’s upbringing and inspired his music, pays tribute to his extraordinary career by dedicating a street in his honor. “Frankie Valli Way” serves as a reminder of Valli’s lasting impact on the music industry and the pride that the city of Newark feels for its homegrown talent.
The unveiling of “Frankie Valli Way” is a momentous occasion, commemorating Valli’s contributions to music and his deep connection to Newark. The partnership between Primary Wave, the city of Newark, and the New Jersey Hall of Fame highlights the importance of recognizing and preserving the legacies of influential artists.
As fans and admirers of Frankie Valli rejoice in this dedication, “Frankie Valli Way” stands as a testament to his talent, perseverance, and the lasting impression he has made on the world of music. It is a reminder that Valli’s unique voice and timeless songs continue to inspire and bring joy to audiences worldwide
