XFL rule differences from NFL include overtime, touchback, Double forward passes, kickoff, 3-point tries, and tiered extra points.
Unlike the NFL, in the case of a tie, the XFL awards each team three attempts in overtime to score a touchdown from the opponent’s five-yard line in an alternative manner.
This brilliant and refreshing rule allowed St. Louis Battlehawks to win 21-17 against Vegas Vipers in April 2023.
XFL is a professional football league that was founded on January 25, 2018, by Vince McMahon. It features various modifications to the rules of football in order to increase its intensity as well as on-air innovations.
Interestingly, the XFL planned to cooperate with the NFL in 2023. Rather than being a rival of the NFL, the XFL will work with the league on enhancements to game rules, officiating, and health and safety.
These are some of the XFL NFL rule differences:
- 3-point tries and tiered extra-points
- Game Timing
- Kickoff rules
- Onside kick rule
- Double forward pass
- OT shootout
- Replay review
- Overtime rules
XFL Kickoff Rules
XFL Kickoff rules state for the kicker to line up at the 30-yard line while in NFL the kicking team lines up at the 35-yard line.
In XFL, the 10 members of the kickoff team are positioned up at the 35-yard line while the touchbacks are spotted at the 35-yard line. The kicking team and return team are within 5 yards.
On the other hand, in NFL, touchbacks are spotted at the 25-yard line, and the eight members of the kicking team line up at the 35-yard line. The kicking team and return team are within 15 yards.
The XFL will keep the modified kickoff rules it had in 2020. That system will make the two teams stand five yards away from each other. The kicking team will stand at the 35-yard line of their opponent while the returning team will stand at the 30-yard line.

As per the XFL, the new Kickoff rules have two big benefits: One is that there were fewer chances of injuries because the blocker and tacklers, who were only five yards apart and didn’t have a running start so didn’t hit each other at full speed.
Likewise, another benefit is that there were more kickoff returns than in the NFL, only 38 percent of kickoffs were returned in the 2022 NFL season, but 97 percent of kicks were returned in the 2020 XFL season.
XFL Scoring Rules
XFL scoring rules book categorized the value of the scoring system into four types:
- Touchdown – 6 points
- Field Goal – 3 points
- Safety – 2 points
- Extra Points
The touchdown is scored when a team crosses the opponent’s goal line with possession of the ball or catches the ball in the opponent’s end zone. A touchdown is worth six points.
A field goal is granted when the offense kicks the ball from on or behind the line of scrimmage or from where a fair catch was made. If a fair catch happens or is given outside the inbound line, the kick is from the closest inbound line.
The ball must not touch the ground or any offensive player before it goes through the goal.
The ball must go completely through the area above the crossbar and between the uprights or, if higher than the uprights, between their outer edges.
The pass fails if the ball goes through the goal and returns through it without hitting the ground or anything or anyone behind the goal.
The Safety point is awarded two points if the offense commits a foul in its end zone and the penalty is accepted or if the team with the ball or that pushed it out of bounds makes the play end behind its own goal line.
The extra points are awarded under the following conditions:
- One point from the opponent’s two-yard line
- Two points from the opponent’s five-yard line
- Three points from the opponent’s ten-yard line
XFL Overtime Rules
XFL Overtime rules allow three rounds where each team gets one offensive play from the opponent’s 5-yard line. A score in overtime gets two points.
After each team has had the chance for three attempts, the winner will be decided based on the team who has the most points after the OT. The extra period consists of:
- Try Attempt
- Results of a try
- Fouls committed during a try
If the score is remained tied after the three-round OT, the teams continue to alternate single plays until one team scores and the other does not. If the offense fails to score, the game will go to sudden death.
The OT XFL rules are different from NFL but similar to NHL and MLS, where both teams will get an equal chance to score.
XFL Onside Kick Rule
XFL onside kick is a strategy by the scoring team to keep possession of the ball after a successful field goal or any try attempt.
It is not only the option for the team to get the ball back at the end of the game but also changes the whole game scenario.
4th and 15 Rule XFL
4th and 15 rule XFL is an alternative to XFL one side kick rule in the fourth quarter which is not present in the NFL.
If a team scores in the final frame and wants the ball back, instead of an onside kick, it can attempt the 4th and 15-play ball from their own 25-yard line.

After that, they can keep the ball and continue their drive if they manage. However, if they fail to convert, they lose possession of the ball.
Additionally, any XFL team can opt for a regular onside kick in the fourth quarter, instead of the 4th and 15 rule. But the 4th and 15 rule is more flexible and exciting.
In 2020, NFL held a meeting on whether to bring the 4th and 15 rule alternative to the onside kick but was dropped.
XFL Double Forward Pass
XFL double forward pass is a rule that allows teams to throw two forward passes on each play, as long as the first pass is completed behind the line of scrimmage.
If the team dropped the first forward pass, it is regarded as an incomplete pass as opposed to a fumble lateral. Likewise, the second forward pass also dropped, then it was considered to be an incompletion.
In the NFL, the team can only throw one forward pass per play, while XFL allows two forward pass on each play.
XFL Extra Point
XFL extra point rules differ from the NFL’s traditional point-after-touchdown system, making every touchdown more exciting for players and fans.
XFL extra point options are 2-yard line, 5-yard line, and 10-yard line. The XFL has three conversion options after a touchdown for attempting extra points.
Each extra point option has a different number of points:
- 2-yard line – one point
- 5-yard line- two points
- 10-yard line – three points
The team has the right to choose the yard line they want to try their extra point from, and then they have one offensive play to try and score.
If the offense gets into the end zone, they get the extra points for that yard line. But if the defense stops the play or forces a turnover, no points are scored. Similarly, defense also awarded the same number of points for a TD.
XFL Touchdown Points
XFL Touchdown Points are awarded when the ball is in possession of a player in the opponent’s goal area or catches the ball in the opponent’s end zone.
A touchdown is worth six points and after TD the scoring team can then attempt a one-point, two-point, or three-point conversion from the 2-yard, 5-yard, or 10-yard line respectively.
NFL team can either kick an extra point for one point or attempt a two-point conversion from the 2-yard line but the XFL team cannot kick an extra point.
