What is the name used to describe the dark bands on Jupiter?
The upper ammonia clouds visible at Jupiter’s surface are organized in a dozen zonal bands parallel to the equator and are bounded by powerful zonal atmospheric flows (winds) known as jets. The bands alternate in color: the dark bands are called belts, while light ones are called zones.

What causes dark belts on Jupiter?
Jupiter’s stripes or ‘bands’ are caused by differences in the chemical composition and temperature of the atmospheric gas. The light-coloured bands are called ‘zones’ and show regions where the gas is rising. The dark-coloured bands are called ‘belts’ and show where gas is sinking.
What is Jupiter’s ring made out of?
dust particles
Jupiter’s rings are formed from dust particles hurled up by micro-meteor impacts on Jupiter’s small inner moons and captured into orbit. If the impacts on the moons were any larger, then the larger dust thrown up would be pulled back down to the moon’s surface by gravity.
Why does Jupiter have a banded appearance?
Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, is a vast and stormy world. Its atmosphere, primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, is crossed with swirling clouds of ammonia that give the planet its banded appearance.
