What are the functions of the pectoral girdle and the pelvic girdle?
The pectoral girdle stabilizes the upper limbs on the thorax and allows a range of mobility at the shoulder. Malformations impair these functions and distort the appearance of the upper chest and back. The pelvic girdle transfers upper body weight to the lower limbs by articulating with the spine.
What is pectoral girdle short answer?
Anatomical terms of bone
The shoulder girdle or pectoral girdle is the set of bones in the appendicular skeleton which connects to the arm on each side. In humans it consists of the clavicle and scapula; in those species with three bones in the shoulder, it consists of the clavicle, scapula, and coracoid.
What do the pectoral girdles help to attach?
The pectoral girdle consists of the clavicle and the scapula, which serve to attach the upper limb to the sternum of the axial skeleton. The scapula (shoulder blade) lies on the posterior aspect of the shoulder.
What function is common to both the shoulder girdle and pelvic girdle?
The pelvic girdle and the shoulder girdle are not alike in their functions related to stabilization and motion of the extremities. In the shoulder girdle the scapula and clavicle work together as unit. The scapula’s primary support is muscles with only one attachment to the axial skeleton, at the manubrium.
What are the bones of the shoulder girdle?
The shoulder girdle is made up of four articulations (sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular, glenohumeral, and scapulothoracic) and three bones (clavicle, scapula, and humerus).
What is the pectoral girdle Class 6?
To sum up, the pectoral girdle is made up of two bones, scapula and clavicle. It connects the upper limb to the trunk. The Pectoral girdle is only connected by ligaments to the vertebral column so there is more range of movement compared to the pelvic girdle.
Why is the pectoral girdle weak?
The pectoral girdle is weaker than the pelvic girdle because the pelvic girdle is the primary weight-bearing and locomotion structure for the body…
What joint actions occur at shoulder girdle?
The shoulder girdle is a gliding joint (with slight rotation) where the clavicle articulates with the scapula, usually moving as a unit. The movements of the shoulder girdle include depression and elevation, upward rotation and downward rotation, as well as abduction and adduction.
What is the difference between the shoulder girdle and pelvic girdle?
The shoulder girdle or the pectoral girdle is a set of 4 bones which connects to the arm on each side. The pelvic girdle consists of two bones: sacrum and the coccyx. The pelvic girdle is formed of paired hip bones each made up of ilium, ischium and pubis. … The pelvic girdle is located in the lower part of the trunk.
What is the main action of the muscles of the pectoral girdle?
The posterior muscles of the pectoral girdle work to elevate the shoulders, retract (pull together) the scapula, move the arm, and assist in pulling the head back. The major muscles in the pectoral girdle on the posterior side of the body are the rhomboid major & minor and the trapezius.
What muscles stabilize the pectoral girdle?
The muscles that position and stabilize the pectoral girdle are located on the thorax. The anterior thoracic muscles are the subclavius, pectoralis minor, and the serratus anterior. The posterior thoracic muscles are the trapezius, levator scapulae, rhomboid major, and rhomboid minor.
Which of the following bones is not part of pectoral girdle which of the following bones is not part of pectoral girdle?
The pubis is not part of the pectoral girdle. This would make answer choice “A” correct. The pubis is actually a structure of the pelvis. The pectoral girdle consists of bones such as the clavicle and scapula.
What do the pectoralis muscles do?
The pectoralis major extends across the upper part of the chest and is attached to a ridge at the rear of the humerus (the bone of the upper arm). Its major actions are adduction, or depression, of the arm (in opposition to the action of the deltoideus muscle) and rotation of the arm forward about the axis of the body.
What are pelvic girdle muscles?
The hip is joined to the pelvic girdle by many muscles. In the gluteal region, the psoas major and iliacus form the iliopsoas. The large and strong gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus extend and abduct the femur. Along with the gluteus maximus, the tensor fascia lata muscle forms the iliotibial tract.
What is the main function of the scapula?
The scapula is an important bone in the function of the shoulder joint. It engages in 6 types of motion, which allow for full-functional upper extremity movement including protraction, retraction, elevation, depression, upward rotation, and downward rotation.
