What is the Difference Between Stoat and Weasel

Stoats and weasels are both carnivorous mammals that belong to the same family of Mustelidae. Present in different coat colors like black, brown, and white, both species resemble each other up to some extent. Thus, many people also get confused while attempting to distinguish them. There are many factors such as physical appearance, behavior, life span, habitat, etc, that can be used to determine the difference between these two hunting mammals.

Stoat vs Weasel

The main difference between Stoat and weasel is that Stoats cannot see during the day. On the other hand, weasels are active throughout the day. Both are good predators and rely on hunting for their livelihood. They do not have a very long life. The differences are attributed to the food gathering styles and means of reproduction.

Stoats are highly active during the night. Therefore, stoats hunt their prey during dusk or night. Stoats are more valiant. Apart from small animals, they are also likely to hunt animals of larger size like rabbits. While hunting they usually attack their prey by biting its neck. Being cautious, stoats also store their food for the future.

Weasels are not nocturnal creatures and thus efficiency is high. They prefer daytime to hunt animals. Weasels usually attack prey of the same size or smaller. Due to their fast metabolism, weasels consume at least half their body weight every day. The size does not increase beyond a particular point.

Comparison Table Between Stoat and Weasel

What is Stoat?

The stoat is an intelligent hunter that has a keen sense of smell, hearing, and sight. They inhabit the Northern Temperate regions of Eurasia and North America. Stoats of southern counterparts are bigger than stoats of northern populations. The group of stoats is called ‘Caravan’

The coat color of stoats changes according to season. In summer, it remains brown and white. Whereas in winter their coat color changes to complete white, except the tail tip which always remains black. It is called Ermine.

Stoats use rodent burrows, hollow logs, and stone walls as their den to live.

Due to its agile body, stoats can easily go underground burrows. The food requirement of stoats mainly derives from other animals’ flesh like rabbits, rodents, voles. They primarily hunt during the night. Due to their invasive personality stoats prefer to live alone and they mate only once a year.

Stoats have been considered sacred animals by Zoroastrians because of their white winter coats that represent purity.

What is Weasel?

Weasel is one of the smallest carnivorous species that belongs to the mustelid family. They originated in the New World (Flynn and Wesley hunt 2005).

Apart from a quick and bouncy gait, weasels are also adept swimmers and tree climbers. The farmers of New Zealand have tried using weasels for prevention against rabbits and voles. But in the mid-nineteenth, due to their aggressive hunting of birds, weasels had created a negative image of themselves.

Thus, in the late-nineteenth century, countries like North America and Europe started the war against predators that eat birds or their eggs. These countries also labeled weasels as “Vermin”.

Although weasels receive negative comments, they also have some positives on planet earth. Early Europeans appreciated weasels for their ability to control rodent populations People of countries like Italy and Spain give complimentary names to weasels such as Donna and Comadreja.

In Egypt, before the domestication of cats, Egyptians used to tame weasels. Weasels can be found all over the world except Australia and Antarctica.

Main Differences Between Stoat and Weasel

  1. Due to their size difference, stoats are likely to hunt bigger animals whereas weasels are likely to hunt smaller prey like voles or mice because of their slim physique, weasels can easily go down the mice holes to hunt mice.
  2. Stoats are usually bound while hunting. It helps them to confuse their prey and then attack them easily. On the other hand, weasels quickly move close to the land without bound.
  3. Stoats do not have brown patches in their throats but weasels have brown patches on each side of their throats.
  4. In stoats, males are larger than females in size but in weasels, both males and females are similar in size.
  5. In terms of health problems, stoats suffer from the diseases like tuberculosis and canine distemper whereas weasels do not have such diseases usually.

Conclusion

Stoats and weasels are considered similar because, within the same species, both animals are very alike and share most of their general culinary tastes.

They have very sharp claws and teeth, which combined with their small size means that these animals can inflict lethal damage. Both are aggressive and can be dangerous if they are cornered. Stoats have a longer life expectancy. They live up to 9 to 10 years. Whereas weasels live up to 3 years.

Due to their hunting behavior, stoat and weasel can not be kept as a pet. They do not like the company of other animals. And there are chances they can attack humans because their hunting instinct always remains active.

In contrast to other predators, the stoats are mainly solitary animals, making isolated dens its main breeding place. The construction of the globular den is varied and not consistent so that they can fall on their prey while they go hunting at night. They have a good sense of smell.

By physical appearance, both the species look cute and cuddly but in reality, they are invasive. They can kill prey by grasping their neck with their mouth and pulling back, suffocating them.
