Usually, people talk as matter of fact, but today discussion is all about the matter of state in the essence of solid and Liquid. In general, there are three different states of matters that is Solid, Liquid, and Gas. But if we go deeper into the context of States of Matters then there are 4 states of matters which are – Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma. Without states of matters, our life is incomplete.
Solid vs Liquid
The main difference between Solid and Liquid is Solid has a definite shape and Liquid has no shape, whereas solid is rigid and Liquid has the tendency to flow. Solid is incompressible whereas Liquid is compressible.
Especially, if we talk about Solid and Liquid, they both can’t live without each other, because before turning or molding something into a solid-state, initially it is heated in a liquid state, and to hold any liquid state we need the help of solid-state.
Comparison Table Between Solid and Liquid
What is Solid?
In a general sense, a solid-state is the state of matter which is resistant to any changes and which has a definite shape and volume whose atoms are bound together strongly and are incompressible.
Though, the solid-state of matter can only be changed if they are broken or are have been cut into pieces by a certain force. The solid-state of matters have different types such as ceramic, metals, minerals, organic solids, woods, nanomaterials, semiconductors, composite materials as well as biomaterials. The solid-state of matters in physical strength are ductile, elastic, strong and tough with certain kinds of flexibility. Even the soli-state of matters has properties like thermal, optical, optoelectric, electrical, and electromechanical.
Examples of Solids are –
- Brick
- Coin
- Iron bar
- Building
- Mobile
- House
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Door
- Shoes
- Bag
- Clothes etc.
3 Basic Properties of Solid are –
- The solid-state of the matter is destined to have a definite shape.
- The solid-state of the matter is destined to have a definite volume.
- The particles of solid-state can be moved according to their fixed axes.
What is Liquid?
In a general sense, a Liquid state is the state of matter which has a definite volume but no definite shape and whose atoms are bound together strongly but for a temporary time and are compressible and free for any changes.
The density of the liquid state of matter is constant. The liquid state of matter is used as solvents to dissolve many other solids and liquids and as lubricants such as oils are used to measure temperature-related terms such as gravity, air pressure, etc.
Examples of Liquids are –
- Honey
- Water
- Wine
- Blood
- Oil
- Milk
- Acetone
- Alcohol
- Rain etc.
3 Basic Properties of Liquid are –
- The liquid state of matter is destined to have no definite shape.
- The liquid state of matter is destined to have a definite volume.
- The particles of the liquid state are free to move over each other but are somehow attracted to each other.
Main Differences Between Solid and Liquid
- The solid-state has definite volume and shape whereas the liquid state has only definite volume but no definite shape.
- The solid-state has its shape whereas the liquid state adapts the shape of the container or any other solid-state of matter where it is poured in.
- The atomic bond of the solid-state is permanently strong whereas the atomic bond of the liquid state is temporarily strong.
- The solid-state of matters is more elastic, hard, strong, tough, and flexible compare to the liquid states of matters.
- The density of solid-state is more compare to the liquid state.
- The solid-state of matters cannot be compressed whereas the liquid state of matters can be compressed.
Conclusion
In a simpler term, the matter is anything and everything which occupies space and has mass. Every matter is composed of atoms and other subatomic particles and matter can be seen or felt through more than one sense of the human body.
Since there are 4 states of matters known as solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. All these four states have mass, height, length, and width. Matters also have a feature of attracting other objects with the help of gravity.
Both, Solid-state and Liquid state of matters is known as Condensed matters. Solid and Liquid are known as condensed phases because both of them have strong and inter-molecules compare to the gas state. These strong inter-molecules are the reason for their behavior and characteristics in a solid-state and liquid state in the essence of the close relationship between each of them.
The easiest difference between the solid-state and liquid state of matter is that liquid can flow and solid cannot flow because it is rigid. Whereas, solid make its shape and liquid adopt the shape of the solid-state of matter.
