What is the Difference Between Oceanography and Zoology

Oceanography and zoology are interdisciplinary subjects that involve the study of oceans and animal kingdoms. firstly, Oceanography is a multidisciplinary subject that involves the study of geology, geophysics, chemistry, physics, computer science, and biology to understand the oceans and Zoology is the branch of biology that deals with the animal kingdom.

Oceanography vs Zoology

The main difference between Oceanography and Zoology is that Oceanography which is also known as oceanology means the scientific study of the oceans. it covers a wide range of topics such as waves which is a phenomenon of the coast, tides, and currents on the other hand Zoology studies animal kingdoms including their evolution and classification.

The word Oceanography has been derived from ancient Greek that is “ocean” and “write”. It is also known as oceanology which involves the scientific study of oceans that covers a diverse range of topics including marine life and ecosystems, waves, currents that are perceived as relatively narrow bands of swift-moving waters along the coast.

The word Zoology has also been derived from ancient Greek. it is the field of biology that involves the study of various types of animals that encloses all aspects of scientific knowledge about animals including their evolution, classification, behavior, and their embryonic development.

Comparison Table Between Oceanography and Zoology

What is Oceanography?

Oceanography is as the subject matter is gaining importance these days because global warming is soaring and the ocean is threatened by changing climatic conditions, pollution due to which coastlines are deteriorating and eroding and the whole marine life is under a great threat and risk of extinction. due to this very reason, the role of oceanographers is gaining importance. as there are four major branches of oceanography

  1. First is biological oceanography which involves the study of diverse ocean plants and animals along with their interaction with the marine environment.
  2. The second branch is physical oceanography which involves the study of the relationships between the seafloor, the coastline, and the atmosphere.
  3. The third branch is chemical oceanography which primarily focuses on the study of the chemical composition of seawater, and it gets affected by factors such as human activities and weather
  4. The fourth branch is geological oceanography which deals with the formation of the seafloor, and it gets changed over time.

In addition to this, nowadays a lot of research is also happening around the world.

What is Zoology?

Zoology is a branch of biology that deals with and studies the animal kingdom which evolves around structure, evolution, classification, habitat of animals that are living and evenly extinct the main sphere of talk in zoology is how do various animals interact in their ecosystem. Zoology is an Ancient Greek term. It has been brought to notice that people have been interested in learning about animals since ancient times and curious to evolve themselves around the history of their habitat. That is why various branches of zoology have been bifurcated.

Branches of Zoology

  1. Zoography- Another name of zoography is zoogeography which is the study of animals and their habitats. The main concern is to define the geographic ranges of a specific population of animals.
  2. Comparative Anatomy- This is a deeper study of the similarities and differences in the anatomical structure of various types of animals.
  3. Animal Physiology- It is the study of bodily changes and the processes that occur in animals that allow them to survive and maintain.
  4. Ethology- Ethology deals with the behavior of animals and the operations being conducted with them in various laboratories.

Main Differences Between Zoology and Oceanography

  1. Area Covered- The area covered by oceanography is quite vast in comparison to zoology.
  2. Living vs Nonliving – Oceanography deals with the study of the oceanic living organisms whereas the main area of operations of zoology is living and extinct organisms.
  3. Central focus – Oceanography is a central topic in itself whereas Zoology is not a central topic.
  4. Study Around-Oceanography is all about natural phenomenon whereas Zoology is just a branch of biology.
  5. Vastness- The study of Oceanography enhances and enlarges field of study by covering almost all oceanic organisms whereas in Zoology the study is restricted only to animals not the sea creatures that narrows the scope.

Conclusion

Thus, it can be concluded that oceanography is that branch of Earth Science that covers almost all living organisms and identifies the different perspectives of the oceanic creatures whereas on the other hand zoology Deals with the animal kingdom and the structural changes evolving in the animals that are living or evenly extinct. The main difference between zoology and oceanography is that oceanography covers a wide range of topics which is a phenomenon of the coast, tides, and current on the other hand zoology studies animal kingdom including their evolution and classification and their habitat settlement.

The study of both the branch of science enhances knowledge and provides information about various organisms, their living conditions, the atmosphere they require for proper growth and development, the trophic sphere, the habitat. The study is designed to inculcate a habit of learning various skills for animal husbandry evenly. Thus, both the terms oceanography and zoology deals with different aspect of the animal kingdom and oceanic creatures.
