What is the Difference Between Lavatory and Basin

Dumping waste and cleaning is an essential part of living. Every area across the globe has certain places dedicated to each of them, especially households, offices, and even public places. Lavatory and basin are two plumbing fixtures that are used for these purposes. They are often confused to be the same thing, which can cause horrific confusion and unfortunate incidents on usage. Therefore, knowing the differences between the two is important.

Lavatory vs Basin

The main difference between lavatory and basin is that a lavatory is a deep bowl-like structure fixed in bathrooms that can be used by people to urinate in. On the other hand, a basin is a relatively shallow bowl fixed in bathrooms and kitchens that can be used by people to clean their hands or washother things.

A lavatory can essentially be looked at as a toilet. It can be fixed on a wall or on the floor in the form of a commode. Its main purpose is to be used by people to urinate and defecate. For this, the fixture is connected to a pipe that transfers this waste into the sewage system on flushing.

Meanwhile, a basin or washbasin is popularly known as a sink. This plumbing fixture can only be used for cleaning hands, utensils, or other things. For this, there is a tap fixed at the top of the bowl from which water flows. Like the former, the bowl is connected to a pipe as well.

Comparison Table Between Lavatory and Basin

What is Lavatory?

Interestingly, in earlier times, a lavatory was another name for a sink. Down the lane, it began to be used for cubicles or places dedicated for washing, cleaning, urinating, or defecating. However, the term is used nowadays for a plumbing fixture that can only be employed for urination or defecation. This fixture can be placed on floors or even walls.

The architecture of a lavatory is such that cleanliness can be maintained at all times. The main part is a wide and deep bowl into which a person dumps waste. This bowl has a narrow opening to which a pipe is connected. The pipe is placed inside the floor or wall and ultimately gets connected to the sewage system.

Further, a lavatory has a flush. On using this, water is pushed into the bowl by which it becomes clear. This water takes all the waste with it into the pipe and ultimately into the drain. The flush must be used every time a person is done with dumping waste. By doing so, the bowl remains clean and hygienic.

Such a fixture can only be placed in bathrooms. Moreover, it cannot be used for washing hands or other things. Lavatories are used in households, offices, public places, and even airplanes.

What is Basin?

Basins are commonly known as sinks, washbasins, washbowls, or even hand basins. These were first used in the United States in the 18th century. Then, a small pitcher was placed on a flat surface and was filled with water. It could be used for several purposes according to the location that it was placed in.

However, nowadays, a basin is generally located in the bathroom or kitchen. It can be used to wash hands, utensils, vegetables, and other things. The fixture is made on the wall which allows people to stand comfortably while using it.

The architecture of a basin includes a bowl that is smaller and shallower than a lavatory. This bowl is connected to a pipe into which water flows. The pipe ultimately meets the sewage system by traveling through the wall or floor. Moreover, a tap is placed on top of the bowl through which water flows out. This can be done by using a knob fixed to the tap.

Unlike a lavatory, washbasins need not be cleaned after every use. In fact, they remain clean at most times due to the continuous flow of water. However, they do need occasional deep cleans for hygiene and sanitation of the bowl, tap, and pipe.

Main Differences Between Lavatory and Basin

  1. A lavatory is essentially a toilet, whereas a basin is essentially a sink.
  2. A lavatory is used by people to urinate and defecate, whereas a basin is used by people to wash hands, utensils, vegetables, and other things.
  3. A lavatory has a bowl, pipe, and flush, whereas a basin has a bowl, pipe, and a tap for water to flow out.
  4. A lavatory’s bowl is wider and deeper, whereas a basins bowl is smaller and shallow.
  5. A lavatory is placed in bathrooms, whereas a basin can be placed in bathrooms and kitchens.
  6. A lavatory can be fixed on the wall or the floor, whereas a basin can only be fixed on a wall.

Conclusion

A lavatory and basin were essentially the same things in earlier times. However, the nomenclature went through several changes in terms of its meaning. Nowadays, a lavatory is essentially a toilet in which people can urinate and defecate. Meanwhile, a basin is a sink that people can use to wash hands, utensils, vegetables, and other things.

Both lavatories and basins have a bowl. However, a lavatory has a deeper and wider bowl. It needs to be cleaned after every use with the help of a flush or external application of water. A basin need not be cleaned after every use. However, its parts need to be sanitized occasionally for maintaining hygiene.
