What is the Difference Between Cell and Shell

The English language consists of many words that sound pretty similar while we pronounce them. Cell and shell are two such words. These two words have entirely different meanings and significance, but they are often confusing for people due to their similarities in pronunciations. Knowing the discrepancy between the two terms can make you acknowledge these terms well.

Cell vs Shell

The main difference between cell and shell is that the cell is the Fundamental working and basic unit of life on earth. Every organism is composed of cells. On the other hand, Shell is the outer covering of anything, such as layers surrounding the nucleus in atoms where electrons are placed.

The basic working units of life in the universe are cells. The way organisms behave and live all depends on how their cells function. Cells coordinate between them and form the more prominent structures of different organisms. Groups of cells together include organs and form systems in organisms.

Shell word refers to the outer covering of anything. In terms of chemistry, a shell means the covering around the nucleus. The atom consists of nuclei in which protons and neutrons are present. Around that, electrons revolve on a concrete path. This path is called a shell. There are different shells named “K”, ” L”, “M”, “N”, “O” and more.

Comparison Table Between Cell and Shell

What is Cell?

The cell is the smallest living unit. All the live processes are carried out inside this small cell. There are different types of cells. Significant forms of cell type are eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Among eukaryotes, animal cells and plant cells again have some differences. These cells differ in many terms though they consist of cytoplasm enclosed in the plasma membrane.

Eukaryotic cells consist of a nucleus, and prokaryotes don’t have a nucleus; this is the significant difference between them. The cells of eukaryotes don’t have their genetic material bond in the nuclear membrane. Also, prokaryotes don’t have well-defined organelles bound in the membrane as they are in eukaryotes.

Organelles such as the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus,  vacuoles, peroxisomes,  plastids,  chloroplast, lysosome, mitochondria are present in eukaryotes. These organelles are suspended in the cytoplasm and bound only in the plasma membrane in animal cells. While in plants, there are two membranes known as cell wall and plasma membrane.

Cell biology is the term given for the study of cells. Over the years, there have been many studies carried out to study the working of the cell. The cell cycle is the cycle that a cell undergoes and gives rise to a process of its type. This cell cycle is typical to all. There are specific differences between the phases and timings of the cell cycle in eukaryotes and prokaryotes, but the basic model is the same.

What is Shell?

Electrons are placed in the shells around the nucleus; this was given by the postulates presented by scientists Bohr. It referred to the cover as the atomic orbitals. These nuclear orbitals have valued the same as the principal quantum numbers. These shells also have some subshells, or they can also be called sub levels.

There are different shells, and the number of electrons varies. With increasing numbers of shells, the number of electrons placed in them increases. Each progressive electron shell away from the nucleus has more electrons than the inner ones. The number of protons in the middle is the same as that of electrons in the bodies of atoms.

The shell that lies immediately around the nucleus is called as “K” shell. It has a limit of two electrons. The following cover is named L, and M has a limit of 8 electrons. It can have less than 8 electrons but not more than that. Similarly, the following shell has a limit of 18 electrons.

The outermost shells of the atom are called the valence electron. These electrons determine the valency of the atom and element. Energy is released when an electron moves from the outer shell to the inner shell. Also, subshells are present, labelled as 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s,  3p,  3d, 4s,  4p,  4d,  4f.

Main Differences Between Cell and Shell

  1. For the first time, cells on earth existed 4 billion years ago. In contrast, Atomic shells came into existence during the early phases of the Big Bang Theory.
  2. The cell is complete in itself. On the other hand, Shell has no meaning without the atom and electrons placed in it.
  3. The cell was discovered by Robert Hooke using his self-designed microscope. While shells were found using X-rays by analyzing the light emitted by atoms.
  4. Cell term was given by Robert Hooke when he observed the cells in cork slice. On the other hand, Shell’s word comes from Bohr’s theory.
  5. George Emil Palade is referred to as the father of the cell though Robert Hooke discovered it. On the other hand, many scientists worked on atomic orbitals, and Bohr’s model is well accepted.

Conclusion

Cell and shell are the words that sound a little alike, and thus people often mix up these two. But in actuality, they both are two very different concepts. The cell is the part of living organisms, while the shell is the part of elements in nature that are non-living.

Cells are a three-dimensional structure, while shells are merely a path for electrons. Cells have different organelles that carry out all the functions in the cell. While shells are mere orbitals, these are the significant distinctions between the two.
