Shawn Johnson was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and her parents signed her up for gymnastics when she was 3 years old. Beginning when she was just 6 years old, she studied under Liang Chow for approximately 20 years. Johnson maintained a balanced life, in contrast to the majority of the top female gymnasts. She attended Valley High School.
After Johnson finished high school in 2009, her mother and she moved to Los Angeles, California, to compete on Dancing with the Stars. Her high school education was aided by private tutoring, and in 2013 she temporarily enrolled at Vanderbilt University before leaving.
Johnson is married to professional football player Andrew East, and the two of them live in Nashville, Tennessee. She acknowledged having an eating disorder in 2008 in 2015 and said she miscarried a kid in 2017. Their first child, Drew Hazel East, was born in 2019, and their second, Jett James East, was born in 2021.
