What is Faizon Love Doing Today? Overcame Racism and Stereotypes

Who is Faizon Love?

Faizon Andre Love was born on 14 June 1968, in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba; he’s a Cuban-American actor and comedian, widely recognized for his infectious humor and charisma. His career spans more than three decades, with over 80 film and TV series appearances. Some of Faizon’s most notable roles were in comedy movies such as “Don’t Be a Menace”, “Couple’s Retreat”, and “Elf”.

Early life and education

Faizon spent most of his formative years in Newark, New Jersey and San Diego, California. He showed an interest in comedy at an early age and began doing stand-up when he was only 15 years old. In 1986, he matriculated from Morse High School in Southeast San Diego, then moved to New York City to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, where at 19 years old in 1987, he made his acting debut in an Off-Broadway production.

Roles in movies

Faizon made his movie debut in 1992 when he landed a role in the cult classic film, “Bebe’s Kids”, giving voice to the character of Robin Harris, which catapulted him into the spotlight. Faizon’s performance garnered the attention of critics and audiences alike.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Faizon continued to secure roles in various films, showcasing his versatility as an actor. In 1995, he appeared alongside Ice Cube and Chris Tucker in the comedy film “Friday”, in which he played the role of Big Worm, a notorious drug dealer.

In the following year, he played the supporting character Rufus in the African-American comedy “Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood” which was directed by Paris Barclay and starred Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans. The movie is a spoof of the “hood” genre of African-American films, such as “Boyz n the Hood” and “Menace II Society”. It features a mix of slapstick humor, social commentary, and pop culture references, and has become a cult classic for its irreverent and tongue-in-cheek approach to the genre.

Faizon’s acting prowess is not limited to comedic roles. In 1998, he showcased his dramatic abilities in the critically acclaimed film “The Players Club” (1998), directed by Ice Cube. In 2001, Faizon starred in the comedy film “Made”, which was written, directed, and co-produced by Jon Favreau. This was followed by a string of other successful films, including “Elf” (2003), “The Fighting Temptations” (2003), and “Torque” (2004).

One of Faizon’s most prominent movie roles was in the 2009 hit comedy “Couple’s Retreat”, which also starred Vince Vaugh, Jon Favreau and Jason Bateman. The movie follows four couples who go on a vacation to a tropical island resort in order to work on their relationships. Faizon played Shane, a divorced man who comes to the island alone, and is paired with a woman played by Kali Hawk in a process called ‘Eden West Couple’s Retreat’. Shane initially seems like a stereotypical ladies’ man, but later reveals a vulnerable and sensitive side, particularly in his scenes with his assigned partner. Faizon’s performance in the movie was praised for adding depth and heart to the ensemble cast.

In 2012, he appeared alongside Matthew McCounaghey and Zac Efron in the mystery crime drama “The Paperboy”, directed by Lee Daniels, and which followed a reported investigating a case involving a death row inmate. In the following years, Faizon continued appearing in both comedy and dramatic roles in movies, such as “White T” (2013), “Tell” (2014), and “Brotherly Love” (2015).

In 2020, Faizon played a supporting role in the hit comedy “The War With Grandpa”, which featured Robert De Niro in one of his rare comedic roles. Two years later, he took on the title role of Santa Claus in the adult comedy “Santa Games”, directed by Keoni Waxman.

Roles in TV series

In addition to his film career, Faizon has also made a significant impact on the small screen. His television career began in the mid-1990s with guest appearances in popular sitcoms such as “What a Cartoon!” and “The Wayans Bros”.

In 1995, Faizon landed his first major TV series role, in the popular sitcom “The Parent ‘Hood”, which aired until 1999. The show was created by Robert Townsend and Andrew Nicholls, and it focused on the Peterson family, a middle-class Black family living in Harlem, New York City. The series often blended serious issues with comedy, addressing topics such as peer pressure, gang violence, and academic achievement. Faizon appeared in the show in a recurring role as Wendell Wilcox who was often portrayed as a lazy, unmotivated character always looking for an easy way out. Faizon’s comedic timing and physical comedy skills were often highlighted in his role as Wendell.

Faizon’s talent and charisma eventually landed him a starring role in the sitcom “The Big House”, which aired on ABC in 2004. He played the character of Warren, a lovable yet misguided cousin who moves in with his wealthy family after his father passes away. Although the show was short-lived, it served as a platform for Faizon to further establish himself as a gifted actor and comedian.

In the following years, Faizon continued to make guest appearances in popular television shows, including “Black-ish”, “My Name is Earl”, and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”. He’s also lent his voice to animated series such as “The Cleveland Show” and “The Legend of Tarzan”.

More recently, in 2018, Faizon joined the cast of the musical drama “Step Up: High Water”, based on the popular “Step Up” film franchise. It premiered on 31 January 2018, as part of YouTube Red’s original programming lineup. The show combines elements of drama, music and dance to tell the story of aspiring dancers at a prestigious Atlanta performing arts school called High Water. The show features a talented ensemble cast, including Naya Rivera as Collette Jones, the administrator of High Water and a former dancer herself. Ne-Yo, the Grammy-winning artist, portrays Sage Odom, a legendary dancer and the founder of High Water, while Faizon took on the role of Al Baker, the father of two High Water students.

After the series concluded in 2022, Faizon began working on the upcoming sitcom “Prince of Detroit”, in which he’s set to play the leading role.

Other credits

In addition to his roles in movies and TV series, Faizon has also appeared in several music videos through his career. Most notably, in 2001 he guest-starred in “Freaky Things” from Ludacris’ second studio album “Word of Mouf”. In the same year, he also made an appearance as a bus driver in the video for the song “Put Yo Hood Up” by Lil Jon and The East Side Boys. More recently, in 2016, he played a bike cop in “Dum Machine” by Skrillex and Big Grams.

Faizon has also made a mark in the video game industry by lending his voice to Sean ‘Sweet’ Johnson in the popular action-adventure game “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” (2004).

Faizon has also appeared in a number of TV commercials, with perhaps his most notable collaboration being with the mobile network company Boost Mobile from 2012.

Personal life

Despite his busy career in the entertainment industry, Faizon has always made it a priority to maintain a balanced personal life. He is known for being a private individual, often choosing to keep his personal affairs away from the public eye. This has allowed him to focus on his craft and maintain a sense of normality in his life, despite being in the limelight.

Little is known about Faizon’s love life, but it appears that he hasn’t been married. However, he does have a daughter from his previous relationship with Tiffany Tichera Lee.

Controversies

Similarly to many other celebrities, Faizon has faced his share of controversies throughout his career. In 2017, he was involved in a physical altercation at an airport, which resulted in his arrest. Faizon was later charged with misdemeanor assault, to which he pleaded no contest; he was ultimately sentenced to community service and probation.

Faizon has also faced a backlash for some of his controversial statements on social media. He has been known to engage in heated exchanges with other celebrities, leading to further public scrutiny. In 2014, he publicly defended Bill Cosby in the wake of the sexual abuse allegations against the former TV host. He also used profanity against African Americans who didn’t believe that Cosby was innocent, most notably targeting comedian Hannibal Buress, who was one of the first celebrities to bring wider attention to the case.

Net worth

Faizon’s net worth is estimated to be more than $8 million as of May 2023. His wealth can be attributed to his long and successful career as an actor and comedian both in film and on television. Over the years, Faizon has managed to accumulate significant earnings through his roles, as well as through endorsement deals and other income-generating ventures.
