What Is Betsey Johnson’s Style Called? Why Does Betsey Johnson’s Hair Look Like That?

Betsey Johnson’s style is called the Youthquake. Taking her cues from the more avant-garde London fashion scene, Johnson along with designer, Mary Quant and artist, Andy Warhol, helped what became known as the Youthquake.

The Youthquake is a movement in fashion, art and culture.

In 1970, Johnson took control of the fashion label “Alley Cat” which was popular with the rock n roll musicians of the day. In the first year, her debut collection for Alley Cat reportedly sold $5 million in volume.

Johnson started her fashion line in 1978. Her second collection did not sell well, leaving her with 3,000 pieces of spring clothing and insufficient funds to stage a 1981 fashion show to sell them and Johnson opened a retail store in the SoHo area of New York City.
