Since 1972, Chris Murphy has worked as a Court advocate, primarily in defense. Due to his illness, his employment was in jeopardy, which lost him a year.
In October of last year, Chris Murphy, 72, filed a defamation lawsuit against Nationwide News, publisher of The Daily Telegraph, and writer Annette Sharp. Sue Chrysanthou SC, Mr. Murphy’s counsel, contended in court that the article implied Mr. Murphy was “beyond it” and “over the hill.”
She claimed that it implied he was unsuitable to practice law because of his age and deafness. Because of his age and hearing impairments, Federal Court Justice Michael Lee decided that the article defamed Mr. Murphy by implying that he could not serve his clients’ best interests.

However, a judge decided that News Corp’s Daily Telegraph newspaper defamed lawyer Chris Murphy in a ‘gossipy’ piece by Annette Sharp and awarded him $110,000. It implied that he was incapable of performing his legal duties. He won the lawsuit and is now in perfect health.
He did not have any hearing problems, but he was the victim of a scandal that proved his undoing. He managed to win the lawsuit and get freedom from his job. Chris published Murphy’s Law, a full weekly page in Sydney’s Sun-Herald, emphasizing and pushing for law enforcement reform.
He spoke to a time when police officers were compromised, and prosecutors and judges were complacent.
