In order to fill Simmons’ roster slot, the Broncos promoted cornerback Essang Bassey and added former Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles safety Anthony Harris to the practice squad.
While Harris, 30, has played in 95 games in his career, Bassey, 24, has appeared in 13 games for the Broncos over the past two seasons.
One of the team captains, Simmons has been selected to the Pro Bowl once in his career and twice to the second team of All-Pros.
Coach Nathaniel Hackett would only say that Simmons was “going to miss some time” before Wednesday’s practice, even though the Broncos had already made the decision to place Simmons on injured reserve and sign Harris.
What happened with Justin Simmons?
Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons sustained a thigh injury in the team’s Week 1 defeat, keeping him out for at least a month. As if the Denver Broncos didn’t leave Seattle with enough disappointment packed in their luggage.
