What Happened To Steven Stamkos Leg? Tampa Bay Lightning Center Injury Details

After a horrific skating rink accident, Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos had surgery. He recovered within three months and is playing better than ever.

Canadian professional ice hockey player Steven Stamkos is the team’s captain and plays center for the National Hockey League (NHL). The Lightning picked Stamkos first overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

He is a two-time recipient of the Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy as the NHL’s top goal scorer (2010 and 2012), a two-time NHL Second Team All-Star (2011, 2012), and a seven-time NHL All-Star Game participant.

Stamkos led the Lightning to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2020 and 2021. He is now Lightning’s captain in the 2022 Stanley Cup Finals.

Tampa Bay Lightning Steven Stamkos Injury Update: What Happened To His Leg?

In November 2013, a tragic event made Steven halt his play for three months. In a game against the Bruins in Boston, the Lightning captain shattered his right leg after falling into a goal post.

It happened as he was hooked on edge and twisted his ankle, making his leg hit the goal post hard. This incident occurred during the second period of Tampa Bays against the Boston Bruins.

The TD Garden Center became silent as one of the league’s top players writhed in pain. Stamkos attempts to get up and skate on it twice before ultimately giving up and lying on the ice with his face covered, striking the ice four times in agony.

Viewers in the front-seat row looked at a leg bending in a way legs are not made to bend and to Stamkos’ considerable pain. The player broke his right tibia and announced that he had to undergo surgery.

Stamkos had to perform surgery since his injury was not a routine break that could be cast and ready in six weeks. His fracture seemed to be displaced, which is not surprising considering that he briefly had an additional knee around mid-shin.

The operation was scheduled for the day after the event. Thus, there was probably no serious vascular or nerve injury, which would have constituted a surgical emergency.

Steven returned to the rink on March 6, 2014, a little over three months after his injury. He missed 45 games, one bad trade, and the opportunity to compete in the Olympics, but his recovery was still impressive.
