Big Mama Thornton actress from Elivs, Shonka Dukureh, passed away at 44, on Thursday.
According to Nashville police, her body was discovered in the apartment she and her two young children occupied in Nashville.
No cause of death has been determined to this point. Police reported that there was no evidence of wrongdoing.
Metro Nashville PD reported, “There is no indication of foul play in today’s death of actress Shonka Dukureh, who played Big Mama Thornton in this year’s Elvis movie.”
Shonka’s admirers and co-stars are now paying tribute to her on social media.
Shonka Dukureh’s Family With Husband
Actress Shonka Dukureh was married and she has two children with her husband.
Despite being married, her husband’s identity is unknown. She kept her personal life confidential, so it is impossible to obtain information about her wedding date as well.
In an interview Shonka posted on Instagram last week, she discussed her breakout performance in “Elvis.”
“Gratefulness is where I live since my granny, gmama, momma, family modeled and ingrained it in me,” she added.
“It’s not a posture of inferiority or crumbs scraping, but one that understands those good things aren’t a guarantee and that, when we encounter them, gratitude is the least we can do,” she continued.
Jonh Cooper, the Mayor of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County, wrote, “My deepest condolences to the family of Shonka Dukureh.
“Her powerful voice and artistry will live on through her music,” Cooper further said.
