The judge laughed at the case when Ronald Hammond appeared in court in Baltimore on a charge of possessing 5.9 grams of marijuana.
Ronald Hammond got arrested for possessing marijuana worth $5 in 2012. The then 31-year-old man won an appeal in early June 2015, invalidating the plea and raising the possibility of his freedom.
When Baltimore District Judge Askew Gatewood advised prosecutors that “5.9 grams won’t roll you a respectable joint” and urged Ronald Hammond to enter a plea in the 2012 case, Hammond did so. Gatewood also suggested that Hammond take the appeal and pay a fine.
After entering a plea, Hammond was summoned back to court for violating the terms of his probation and told that his petition had conviction for crack cocaine dealing.
In that case, Circuit Judge Lynn Stewart-Mays had sentenced Hammond to 20 years of probation with a warning that if he broke the terms of his probation, he would serve the entire term. In 2013, she followed through on the notification.
In light of the allegation that Hammond had not been adequately informed of his right to counsel when Gatewood suggested he accept the deal, Nance overturned Hammond’s marijuana plea, according to attorney Gabriela Hopkins.
Hopkins claimed that Hammond is ready to return home and resume providing for his two young children as he did before breaking the terms of his probation. Ronald is in prison in Baltimore and facing his 20 years of imprisonment.

Judge Lynn Stewart-Mays revoked his probation and gave him a 20-year prison term for this minor offense. The judge thinks that this punishment is appropriate and fair. The prosecution is still standing by the harsh sentencing.
Everyone else in the system, except for the public defender fighting for Hammond’s freedom, seemed to consider Hammond as another Baltimorenian whose life was worthless. He even didn’t have a lawyer when he admitted to possessing marijuana. People at the time talked about his poverty too.

After facing 20-year long imprisonment and he will be released in 2028. However, his lawyers said that his triumph before Chief Judge Alfred J. Nance in early June 2015 would allow him to leave prison much sooner.
