Today would have been my wife’s birthday, which made it all more surprising/utterly unexpected for this to happen last night during what I thought would be a speech to @CPSThinkTank about free trade (and, as it turned out, Peppa Pig as an exemplar thereof) (1/?) pic.twitter.com/wR9xLMGGaV

What Happened To Robert Colvile Wife?
Robert Colvile’s wife, Andrea E. Coleman, died in 2018.
After giving birth to Alexander in September of that year, she became unwell. Shortly after the Yule holidays and her 40th birthday, her deteriorating health was more noticeable.
Then in February 2019, the doctors diagnosed her with shingles and noticed something strange about her skin tone. They eventually found out about the drastically abnormal liver readings. Seemingly, her breastfeeding and looking after a newborn weren’t the only reasons for her fatigue and dehydration.
These were the early symptoms of autoimmune hepatitis, liver inflammation due to the body’s immune system turning against liver cells. Andrea had that condition lurking in her system for decades. With causes unknown, he speculated that some severe allergic reaction to an anti-acne drug in her teens triggered it.
This is a bit weird of you if I’m honest. I wrote a book. It sold pretty well. Got good reviews, people liked it. It wasn’t Chavs or The Establishment, but not much is. Then I stopped having time to write books for reasons which are fairly obvious to anyone who knows me.

The months after the diagnosis was hideous as Andrea made frequent visits to the hospital. And it became apparent that her survival required a liver transplant. However, the ugly truth was that the steroids she took had depressed her immune system to the point where she contracted a fungal infection from one of the millions of spores everyone breathed without even thinking.
The illness spread to her brain. And for the transplant to take place, doctors would need to switch off her immune system to prevent the body’s rejection of the new liver. Doing so would enable the infection to run violent. Hence, the choice was between a quick death and a slow one.
Then early July, the hospital called Robert and the family members and told them that they had to do too much to keep her alive. At that time, his wife was in a semi-coma, and he, along with his family, said their goodbyes.
Several days after the untimely death of his wife, he launched an online fundraising program, attempting to achieve something positive from the tragedy. Within a few hours, the donations reached over $13 thousand. By December 2019, it was above $130 thousand. Using the collected money, he and the Medical Research Foundation launched a new fund that year for studying autoimmune hepatitis.
