What happened to Phil Phillips?

Phillip Phillips was chosen as one of the Top 25 semi-finalists on February 23, 2012, sealing his spot in the eagerly awaited Top 13. Phillips’ unique performing approach garnered comparisons to the well-known artist Dave Matthews throughout the competition, and he even performed a song by Matthews, “The Stone,” on stage.

Dave Matthews gladly showed his support for Phillips’ imitation of his technique when asked about it, saying that he didn’t object and jokingly joking that Phillips could take his place in his own band.

Stevie Nicks, Phillips’ instructor, also praised the extraordinary talent of his pupil, saying that, after hearing him sing Jonny Lang’s “Still Rainin’,” specifically, he would have been a suitable addition to Fleetwood Mac.

Despite encountering many difficulties along the way to winning American Idol, including several trips to the hospital for what were thought to be kidney stones, Phillips persisted and gave excellent performances. He captivated the audience during his Top 3 performance with a moving performance of Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight.”

Phillips’ performance of Damien Rice’s “Volcano,” which she performed in the Top 4 round, is frequently hailed as one of the best in American Idol history. Amazingly, Phillips never lost a round in the tournament, and after a record-breaking 132 million votes were cast in the final round, he defeated Jessica Sanchez to win the competition.
