What Happened To Mike Nifong And Where Is The Former Attorney Now?

Michael Byron Nifong is a former North Carolina lawyer who has since been disbarred and lately made news for his role in the Crystal Magnum case. The state impeached him after being accused of being an injustice minister.

He held the position of district attorney for Durham County, North Carolina, until court conclusions on his actions in the Duke lacrosse case resulted in his removal, disbarment, and imprisonment.

In the internationally publicized Duke lacrosse case, three Duke University men’s lacrosse team members were wrongfully accused of rape in a 2006 criminal prosecution in Durham, North Carolina, in the U.S.

What Happened To Mike Nifong?

Michael Nifong had been disbarred after being found responsible for several unethical conducts related to his handling of the Duke Lacrosse probe.

Before the panel published its decision, Nifong said that he thought removal from office would be justified and that he intended to surrender all appeal rights in favor of the panel’s judgment, ABC News reports.

Williamson criticized the convicted attorney after pronouncing his punishment. He claimed that the former lawyer’s motivation for pursuing the Duke Lacrosse issue was self-interest and self-deception.

He was found guilty of making false representations of significant facts before a judge by the bar’s three-person disciplinary panel, which reached this conclusion jointly.

The guilty lawyer was also found guilty of lying about concealing DNA evidence that could have cleared them as well as making a false statement of an essential fact in front of bar officials.

Michael’s sentence was awaited as long-overdue justice for the three athletes charged with rape, kidnapping, and sexual crime in the spring of 2006.

Where Is Mike Nifong Now? The Former Attorney’s Whereabouts

Mike Nifong got sentenced to prison for a lacrosse case. He is reportedly imprisoned in North Carolina’s Durham County Jail.

After the Duke lacrosse case, his legal troubles continued. Darryl Howard was found guilty in 1991 of killing a mother and daughter and sexually assaulting them and got an 80-year sentence, and his conviction was reversed in 2016.

Nifong conducted Howard’s case, and a judge determined in 2014 that he failed to inform Howard’s counsel of evidence that suggested additional suspects.

The convicted attorney has maintained a low profile since Howard was cleared in 2016 of all charges. He is still residing in Durham County, North Carolina, with his wife, Cy Gurney.

The 71-years-old has a son with Gurney and a daughter from his first wife. It is uncertain what he is working on presently.

Michael Nifong Case Update

Nifong stood in a conference room on Monday and briefly chatted with Julia Sims of WRAL-TV. Due to misbehavior, Tracey Cline, his heir, and a former student got ejected from the position of the chief prosecutor.

Since taking on Howard’s case, The Innocence Project has successfully overturned the sentence in 2014 and is now pursuing legal action against Durham officials for continuing to conceal evidence from 2011, as per The Washington Post.

In 2014, Radley Balko of The Post documented the numerous issues with the Howard case on his blog, The Watch, adding that Durham County did not appear to have learned anything from the Duke lacrosse case.
