Michael Johnson had a stroke back in 2018. He suffered a brain stroke and has now recovered from it.
He recalls the strange physical sensations he had seconds after completing his daily workout in his home gym. He had an involuntary movement of his left foot, numbness, and “a sort of tingling feeling” in his left arm.
However, the cause was not a cramp, overexertion, or illness. The great sprinter, a four-time Olympic sprint winner who was just 50 years old at the time, was suffering from a stroke. After a half-hour of deliberation, Johnson decided to go to the hospital.
Armine took him to UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, about 20 minutes from their Malibu home. He was frustrated after the stroke because he had a healthy lifestyle; he didn’t smoke, drink, or have any family history of cardiovascular illness.
But within 24 hours, he had developed a new perspective. Johnson planned to recover from his stroke with the same dedication he had given to his sports career.
