What Happened To Louise Woodward? Stay with us while we unravel the case of the British adolescent whose murder trial in 1977 gripped the globe.
Louise Woodward first came to the United States in July 1996. After leaving her initial placement, she began working as an au pair for Deborah and Sunil Eappen in Boston in November of that year.
Ms. Woodward was entrusted with the care of the Eappens’ 8-month-old son Matthew.
Deborah and Sunil Eappen issued a warning to the British au pair after two months on the job, claiming she was staying out too late at night.
When a jury in Boston found Louise Woodward guilty of killing Matthew Eappen, she burst into tears and pleaded her innocence.
The picture of the crying British adolescent came to represent the judicial effort to prove her guilt – or innocence.

What Happened To Louise Woodward?
On 4th February 1977, after Matthew stopped breathing, Louise Woodward called an ambulance to the family’s house.
She was arrested the next day and sent to Framingham Women’s Prison. She pled not guilty to child battery in court.
On the other hand, the authorities stated that Woodward confessed to shaking the kid and dumping him onto a pile of towels.
Matthew Eappen died on 10th February. He’d had a major brain hemorrhage and eventually turned off his life support system.
The trial began on 7th October 1997 in a courtroom in Boston, Massachusetts.
Ms. Woodward, who was 19 at the time, denied murdering Matthew, but the prosecution said she did it in a “frustrated, sad, and resentful rage.”
The jury had the option of acquitting her or convicting her of murder.
Judge Zobel took the unprecedented decision to put his ruling on the Internet, a move that created history cause of the wrong reasons after a technical glitch in the courthouse.
He argued that convicting Louis for second-degree murder would be a “miscarriage of justice.”
The ruling divided the globe, with some feeling that the original conviction should have stood and others applauding the judge’s decision to reduce the sentence.
