Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber became an iconic duo, capturing hearts with their endearing portrayals of Jane and Michael Banks.
However, their journey together extended beyond Cherry Tree Lane, and the tale took unexpected turns.
The enchanting partnership of Dotrice and Garber began with the 1964 cinematic masterpiece “Mary Poppins,” a film that not only defined their early careers but also forged a timeless connection between the two young actors.
Their collaborative efforts extended to “The Gnome-Mobile” in 1967, where Dotrice and Garber once again graced the screen as the grandchildren of a wealthy lumber mogul.
The film revolved around their adventures in a gnome forest, adding another chapter to their shared cinematic legacy.
However, life’s unpredictable course led Dotrice and Garber down separate paths after “The Gnome-Mobile.”
Despite the magic they created on screen, the two actors did not maintain contact in the years that followed.
In a poignant revelation during an interview for the ’40th Anniversary Edition’ DVD release of Mary Poppins, Dotrice shared the unexpected news of Garber’s passing in 1977.
The revelation came through a call from Garber’s mother, Margot, marking a somber moment that left Dotrice reflecting on the passage of time.
“I remember his mum, Margot, calling […] to let us know that Matthew had died. That was so unexpected. […] I wished I had picked up the phone over the years, I wished I had treated him more like a brother; but he’s indelibly printed in all of our minds, he’s eternal. An amazing little soul,” Dotrice expressed with a mixture of nostalgia and regret.
