Since David’s family bakery started, it has made several headlines on local and national news. Reportedly, his son, Allyn, confronted three black Oberlin College students in November 2016 as one of them stole wine bottles from the store.
Following the arrest, the other students began protests against the bakery. Then, in 2017, the students pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, and the court stated that Allyn’s actions on that day weren’t racially motivated.
The same year, David and his father filed a lawsuit against the college, alleging that the educational institution hurt their business and defamed them. The students handed out fliers outside the shop, urging the customers to go elsewhere.

David received $14 million in compensatory and punitive damages, while $6.5 million for his father and family patriarch Allyn Gibson and $4.5 million for the bakery.
And recently, in April 2022, the 9th District Court of Appeals in Akron upheld a $25 million judgment for late David’s family business. It rejected all of Oberlin College’s claims.
Moreover, the three-judge panel agreed with Lorain County Judge John Miraldi’s decision. They further rejected the institution’s motion for a new trial.
