Adam Neumann’s Carbon Startup: What Happened?

Adam Neumann’s carbon startup, Flowcarbon, has been paused indefinitely.

The company aimed to trade carbon credits by incorporating them into blockchains, or in other words by treating them as cryptocurrencies.

A carbon credit is a permit that permits the owner to emit a set quantity of CO2 or other greenhouse gases. One credit allows for the release of one ton of CO2 or the equal in other greenhouse gases according to Investopedia.

Polluters are given credits that enable them to continue polluting up to a specific limit. This restriction is decreased on a regular basis. In the meanwhile, the corporation may sell any unsold credits to another company that requires them.

Flowcarbon aimed to turn such credits into crypto tokens, which will be exchanged on the blockchain and ‘burned’ when the corporation retires the credit in order to claim an offset.

However, Flowcarbon was not the only or the first company to see the implications, according to Business Cloud, Toucan Protocol and KlimaDAO have already sold tokens worth billions since their establishment in 2021.

Neumann’s carbon startup which had raised over $70 million in funds just months prior has been put on pause for an indefinite period of time but the company has decided to not clarify the situation to the general public.

According to The Motley Fool, Verra, the world’s largest carbon offset registry, has prohibited the use of its credits to support new digital tokens, citing misunderstanding regarding offsets’ climatic benefits. This might be the reason behind Flowcarbon putting its product on Hold for the time being.
