What Happened Between Judge Janet Difiore and Dennis Quirk?
Amid a heated argument over required COVID-19 vaccinations, the chairman of the New York court officers union Denis Quirk was fired in late August 2021 for defaming the state’s chief judge Janet Difiore in a Facebook post.
DiFiore requested that Quirk be penalized in a letter to Phyllis Orlikoff Flug, the hearing officer in Quirk’s case, claiming that Quirk “exemplifies no guilt.”
Quirk was suspended for 30 days without pay and ordered to surrender his firearm. He had to face the official charge of misconduct by one comment against the NYC chief judge.
The suspension represents a further escalation in the conflict between the union and the chief judge on the requirement that court employees receive the COVID vaccine.
The 72-year-old Quirk said that Difore can’t suspend him from the union. In addition, Quirk said he will continue to serve as the union’s president, a position he has held for 43 years.
According to a report, New York Chief Judge Janet DiFiore had been the subject of a state ethics investigation when she announced on Monday that she would be leaving her position at the end of August.
Janet DiFiore Announced Her Resignation: What Is The Affair?
According to those sources, the commission decided in June to file a formal written complaint against Judge DiFiore charging that she inappropriately used her position to influence a disciplinary proceeding involving Mr. Quirk.
As per Law 360, which cited papers and a source familiar with the investigation, the state Commission on Judicial Conduct is looking into whether DiFiore improperly interfered with the president of the state’s court officers association’s disciplinary proceeding.
Moreover, Law 360 states that judicial ethics prohibit judges from using their positions to influence a case for their benefit.
DiFiore announced her resignation on Monday although her tenure ends in 2025 and praised her performance throughout her more than six years in the role.
After a complaint about Quirk’s alleged behavior toward black court officials was made, according to an article in The Post, DiFiore ordered an “independent investigation of the New York state court system’s reaction to issues of institutional racism,” prompting Quirk to face disciplinary action.
People on Twitter are posting about her and calling her the failed judge to make New York because she was suspected of constantly abusing her power for personal matters. They all believe that the next state judge will prevent misuse of power through a vote.
