More Information About Joan Armatrading

Armatrading started writing songs when she was around 14 years old by setting her own limericks to music on a piano that her mother had bought as “furniture.”

At the age of 15, Armatrading dropped out of school to support her family.

After bringing her guitar to work and playing it during tea breaks, she lost her first job (as a typewriter and comptometer operator).

Armatrading has 20 studio albums under his belt, in addition to a number of live albums and compilations, over the course of a nearly 50-year recording career.
